Just a sunny week or so ago, with my head in the clouds I shuffled from the woman’s section of Value Village heading to the mens pant department, rack. There in the middle of where the bahama shirts and Cosby sweaters meet in some outlandish attic-throw-away-bottleneck, stood an oddly tall man yelling “Who sings this song” as a question to the four or five lonely men idling over the idea of buying Paco Jeans. My path was bringing up the rear, and like the rest of the men in front of me I had no business answering this mans question. Working my way quietly through the blazer jackets I entered the pants department, rack. Personally, I never find anything there, well maybe once or twice. The oddly tall man found me, finding nothing. Looking down at me from across the pants rack he suddenly yelled,
“What song is that?”
“I don’t know” I said nervously, as all of the men now behind the oddly tall man looked on at me, with a sort of gleeful appreciation.
Quickly he boomed, “I hear a voice, and that voice sounds like Stevie Nicks, that tells me that it must be Fleetwood Mac.”
Quietly now, we stared at each other oafishly.

Calling himself the “king of country western-troubadours” might be a little much, but I can say he puts on a hell of a live show. He sports chops that are like god damn rabbits on his face and I don’t think he has teeth. Regardless of his physical appearance his songs are quite good, and, like much of country western mumbo jumbo, they’re about love, guns and well, loving guns, I think. He also moonlights for this program called Adult Swim, lending his southern drawl to the show Squidbillies.

The ho down will be happening at The Earl tonight night at 9pm. It’s $15 for tickets but free if you bring meat loaf. Kidding.

So I found this flyer on the cork board at the bottom of our stairs and, in spite of my inability to find anything to back up the fact that this show is happening, I will not feign away any opportunity for people to experience hipster, pseudo-lowbrow-esque art. Hayley Gaberlavage is presenting a slew of her inspired work starting next month at Octane Coffee. The show runs from the 1st to the 29th, so I guess that this is a leap year? Anyway, I love her website and the fact that she has an Address Book vCard available for download. Here is a bit about her:

Hayley Gaberlavage is inspired by a love for fashion, furniture and modern art. Her contemporary approach to a subject matter results in a unique interpretation of figures, abstracts and landscapes. Oftentimes, her paintings move from the representational to the abstract; a three-dimensional object becomes a simple two-dimensional pattern. Her experimentation with color relationships complements these abstractions. Ultimately, each work is playful, alive, and unique.

I, for one, totally dig his semi-surreal (and don’t forget sexy) illustrations of heavily tattooed, Barbie-doll-figured women. And I don’t need to be reminded of how unrealistic that is because, duh!, I already knew that.

One or two old friends of ours are putting together an art auction at Lenny’s on December 15th. The show will feature the work of more than twenty local Atlanta artists with the proceeds going to support the Atlanta Food Bank. Regrettably, the only artist’s name that I’m able to recognize is Mikey Jenkins, who used to tattoo at Sacred Heart and who now presently works at Memorial Tattoo. I can be shameless sometimes, I know.

Anyway, if art isn’t your bag, they will also have some live bands playing: Slow Motion Crash, Imma Williams, Mice in Cars, and more. So go support some of city’s homegrown, local talent and—how could I almost forget—drink some free Pabst.

From the MySpace page of A Moonshine Christmas:

One the date above, universal legend and super hot beach comber, Zach Hinkle will bring his band Cherokee back home to Athens Ga. This particular band, at the end of its post New York city move, Athens Reign of gold was made up of most of It’s Elephant’s as the backing band. There is some sort of Temple of the Dog nod when it concerns the players of these two bands and various others. At this moment, we are not sure who will be playing but nonetheless if you are into good music and are not to much of a puss to drive to Athens, get into it.

For shits and giggles, here is the Temple of the Dog relation tree; to the best of my knowledge.
